# Expense Categories

> The expense categories in Selly and what belongs in each one.

## Overview

Every expense is assigned a category. Categories help you understand where your overhead is going and power the spending breakdown chart on the Expenses page.

## Categories

### Shipping

Everything related to physically getting items to buyers.

* Poly mailers, bubble mailers, boxes
* Bubble wrap, tissue paper, packing tape
* Postage (USPS, UPS, FedEx, etc.)
* Shipping label costs
* Insurance on shipments

### Fees

Costs charged by platforms and payment processors.

* Marketplace seller fees (StockX, GOAT, eBay, Depop, etc.)
* Payment processing fees (PayPal, Venmo business, etc.)
* Authentication fees
* Consignment fees

<Note>
  Platform fees are usually a percentage of the sale price. Log them after reconciling your payout reports to get the exact amount.
</Note>

### Storage & Space

Costs for storing your inventory.

* Storage unit rent
* Extra closet or room rent (if you pay separately for storage space)
* Shelving and storage organization equipment

### Tools & Software

Subscriptions and tools you use to run your resale business.

* Selly subscription
* Inventory management tools
* Price tracking apps (e.g. StockX Price Guide, Sneaker News)
* Accounting software
* Photo editing apps
* Social media tools

### Travel & Sourcing

Costs incurred while acquiring inventory.

* Gas and mileage for sourcing trips
* Entry fees for sneaker conventions or trade shows
* Parking
* Travel to pick up items

### Marketing

Costs for promoting your business or storefront.

* Instagram or Facebook ads
* Business card printing
* Promotional materials

### Misc

Anything that doesn't fit the above categories.

* Authentication services
* Cleaning supplies for prepping items
* One-off costs that don't recur

<Tip>
  When in doubt between categories, use Misc. Consistency matters more than perfection — the goal is to capture the cost, not to overthink the category.
